The Gilded Age

 Essay regarding The Gilded Age

The term " Gilded Age" is placed on the years between 1865 and 1900 because the era was so wealthy. The word " gilded" refers to something coated in gold. During this time period, many things were going on in various topics, just like politics and labor. See, the government became laissez-faire. Involving the Republicans and the Democrats, president elections had been very close. The Republicans constantly carried the North in presidential elections, while the Southern was solidly Democratic. Democrats carried the responsibility for the bloody upheaval of the Civil War, while the Republicans were associated with North aggression and domination. With this, the Republicans as well as the Democrats did not have solid opposing philosophy during this period. The Republicans supported excessive tariffs and sound funds, while the Democrats supported lower tariffs and expanded currency. Since both parties were therefore close in strength, it caused the elections to be fought harder. These politics disturbances induced corruption in the federal government. Various people who had been elected to office, utilized their power to gain personal profit. There have been a lot of scandals concerning politicians taking advantage of contracted corporations. Once Grover Cleveland was elected Leader for two separate terms, even more corruption started out, as change movements had been proposed. Cleveland wanted to reform tariff, but Congress delayed it. The Republicans described Cleveland's tariff reform as a free control policy that would ruin American industries and put Americans out of work. Labor assemblage were started in order to require shorter workdays and higher wages. The National Labor Union formed in Baltimore in 1866. The workers started getting more of the actual wanted as a result of organized hits and protests. The Gilded Age included the two extremes of riches and low income. Although the age was filled with proposals and reforms, many scandals occurred. Overall, the Gilded Era was " golden".
